Budapest is packed with museums and galleries, and there are plenty of temporary exhibitions in the most unlikely of settings, particularly in summer – so keep your eyes peeled. Also note that most museums are closed on Mondays.

Hungarian National Gallery (Magyar Nemzeti Galéria)
Occupying three wings of the Buda Royal Palace, the Hungarian National Gallery contains around 100,000 works of art that present the rise and development of fine art in Hungary.

Hungarian National Museum (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum)
It may be a cliché, but the National Museum with its most significant building and oldest exhibition really is impossible to miss.

KOGart - The House of Art and Gastronomy (KOGart - A művészetek és gasztronómia háza)
KOGart is a mansion on Andrássy street dedicated to contemporary art and events.

Ludwig Museum (Ludwig Múzeum)
Relocated to the newly built Palace of Arts, the Ludwig Museum was Hungary’s first international showcase for contemporary art, including some late Picassos and examples of American pop art.

Museum of Applied Arts (Iparművészeti Múzeum)
Coming by plane you may catch the sight of this breathtaking building with its green tiled roof. The Museum of Applied Arts contains a wide range of textiles, ceramics and furniture handed down through the centuries.

Museum of Ethnography (Néprajzi Múzeum)
Opposite the Parliament of Hungary you may find the Museum of Ethnography with its current permanent exhibition entitled 'Folk Culture of the Hungarians'. It depicts the events and everyday life of Hungarian peasantry.

Museum of Fine Arts (Szépművészeti Múzeum)
The museum to the right of Hősök tere boasts a fine collection of art from all over Europe. The names speak for themselves: El Greco, Goya, Raphael, Rubens, Monet, Manet and Cezanne. And there's much more, including an Egyptian section and some Greek and Roman remains.

Műcsarnok Exhibition Hall (Műcsarnok)
On the other side of Hősök tere you can find the ‘Exhibition Hall’ which gives place for contemporary arts in a beautiful neo-Renaissance building.

Statue Park (Szoborpark)
In the outskirt of Budapest you may find this open-air museum where all the gigantic statues collected from the socialism can be seen. Statues of Marx, Engels, Lenin and other socialist heroes can’t be missing from here.

The Holocaust Documentation and Memorial Centre (Holokauszt Emlékközpont)
Intended not just as a museum and memorial, the Holocaust Documentation and Memorial Centre is also a forum for discussion and an attempt to promote acceptance of the holocaust as part of Hungarian, as well as German history.

The House of Terror (Terror Háza)
For the much of the last century, 60 Andrássy út was an address that struck fear into the hearts of Hungarians. The collection's aim is to present what life was for Hungarians those times and to remind visitors of these bloody periods.

The Jewish Museum (Magyar Zsidó Múzeum)
Behind the Great Synagogue and in the house where Theodore Herzl, the father of the Zionist movement was born, the Jewish Museum contains a wealthy photography and artefact collection documenting Budapest's proud Jewish heritage.
